Circa : is a work of fiction based on true events, exploring myth, land, rest, discovery and travel through concepts of First-isms and ideas of the Main Character.
Shepherd Manyika is the first Malawian Artist-Educator to exhibit at Eastcheap Space.
Using the concept of “The First” to untangle the experiences of exploration and discovery, Manyika’s work responds to histories past, present and those that will come in the future. Shown through a Sci-Fi, Afro-Futurist perspective, the Main Character experiences presented territories; uncovering new landscapes, textures and colours for the First time ever.
Sampling and freestyle culture - as situated in hip hop’s methodologies - are used to interweave and form the landscape and narratives on which ‘circa’ takes place. The Main Character explores and encounters the historical and personal to construct his own mythology and world.
